MIND BENDING: THE SCIENTIFIC TRUTHS BEHIND EXTRA SENSORY PERCEPTION (ESP)

By Gary Seven

Extra Sensory Perception (ESP) is a phenomenon that has intrigued psychologists and quantum physicists worldwide. Despite continuous scepticism, numerous scientific research studies demonstrate instances of ESP, sparking interest and paving the way for future enquiries. This article presents ten such studies shedding light on the mysterious world of ESP.

ESP AND DREAM TELEPATHY: STANFORD UNIVERSITY
In 1950, Psychologists Ullman and Krippner at Stanford University conducted a series of experiments to investigate dream telepathy and ESP. They tested subjects in their sleep, using a sender to convey an image to the sleeping participant. On awakening, these participants noted down their dreams, which often included details from the transmitted image.

GEOFFREY PEARSON’S RANDOM NUMBER GENERATION STUDY
Dr. Geoffrey Pearson advanced ESP research in 1988 by studying how individuals could influence Random Number Generators (RNG). Participants focused on swaying the generator to produce higher or lower numeric sequences. Pearson reported statistically significant results, revealing an extra-sensory influence on RNGs.

PAUL STEVENS AND THE PK MAN
At the Koestler Parapsychology Unit, Edinburgh in 1995, researcher Dr. Paul Stevens examined Ted Owens, popularly known as the ‘PK Man.’ Owens claimed to possess ESP abilities, predicting various events and manipulating weather patterns. Stevens conducted comprehensive monitoring and reported evidence supporting some of Owens’ prophecies.

RUPERT SHELDRAKE AND TELEPATHIC DOGS
Dr. Rupert Sheldrake, a former biochemist at Cambridge University, explored telepathy in animals in 2000. He focused on a dog (Jaytee) that allegedly knew when its owner was returning home. Sheldrake’s extensive experiments demonstrated remarkable instances of Jaytee’s abilities, often indicating a strong sense of his owner’s return.

DUKE UNIVERSITY’S ZENER CARDS
In the mid-1930s, at Duke University, Dr. J.B. Rhine and his team used specially designed Zener cards for ESP research. Subjects guessed the symbol on the cards before they were shown. Despite scepticism, Rhine’s experiments presented evidence of ESP, with subjects achieving higher-than-chance scores.

STANFORD RESEARCH INSTITUTE AND REMOTE VIEWING
At the Stanford Research Institute in 1972, physicists Russell Targ and Harold Puthoff undertook research on remote viewing, a type of ESP. Using a series of double-blind experiments, they studied military personnel claiming to ‘see’ objects or places remote from their physical location. The striking accuracy they reported garnered attention and controversy.

UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA AND PRECOGNITION
In 2011, Professor Daryl Bem at The University of Nevada conducted nine different studies involving over thousand participants on precognition – the psychic perception of future events. Notably, one experiment revealed that students could accurately predict future computer-generated outcomes, indicating possible precognition.

PRINCETON’S PEAR LAB
In 1979, Princeton’s Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) Lab conducted extensive research on ESP. It involved rigorous scientific procedures involving RNGs. After nearly three decades of work, they reported minute but statistically significant effects consistent with ESP.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA AND CHILDREN’S PAST LIFE MEMORIES
Under Dr. Ian Stevenson at the University of Virginia in the early 1960s, researchers began investigating children’s reports of past-life memories. With thorough cross-verifications of these memories, these studies revealed uncannily accurate recollections, suggesting possible past-life experiences or ESP.

PSYCHOKINESIS AND THE CASE OF NINA KULAGINA
In the late1960s, Russian psychic Nina Kulagina was studied under lab conditions following her claim of moving objects with her mind, a phenomenon known as psychokinesis. Despite various criticisms, some researchers reported compelling evidence of her psychokinetic abilities, marking a significant moment in ESP studies.

All cited explorations have cemented the foundation of ESP research, standing as fascinating landmarks in understanding this profound phenomenon. However, as many remain open to interpretation and controversy, they continue to fuel further research on ESP.
